TALLAHASSEE — Competition for the 2A-District 2 duals title could not get much closer between intracity rivals Lincoln & Chiles last Thursday at Chiles.
How close? It took getting to criteria — and even just getting to that required overcoming deficits of 21-0 and 33-6, as the Trojans won six of the last seven matches, going on a 30-3 run to give Lincoln in criteria to win what became the Trojans’ fifth 2A-District 2 title.
With a 69-12 semifinal win over Columbia, the two wins mean that Lincoln (5-4 in duals for the season) will host 2A-Region 1 quarterfinal and semifinal competition on Thursday. The Trojans will face Ft Walton Beach (8-5) in a quarterfinal round.
Chiles (6-1), which reached the final after a 63-12 victory over Arnold, secured its fourth straight region-round appearance when the Marlins and Columbia did not wrestle for third place. The Timberwolves will face District 1 champ Gulf Breeze (12-5) in the other 2A-Region 1 quarterfinal; winners will then square off for a space in the FHSAA 2A state duals tournament on January 20 at Osceola.
As for Lincoln, seven different wrestlers were 2-0 on the night, with Joe Tucker (106, 2 pins), Vaniel Caceres (113, pin), Jashawn Washington (126, pin & decision), Connor Edwards (160, 2 pins), Jakob Nowak (195, decision), Kendrick Scott (220) and Ryder Luck (285) all winning twice.
The Timberwolves got two victories on the night from Sam Tolomeo (120, pin & decision), Jacob Johnston (132, 2 pins), Garrett Marschka (138, 2 pins), Cooper Hill (145, 2 pins), Scott Greenwald (152, pin & decision), Luke Pickels (170, 2 pins) and Cody Elliott (182, 2 pins) all going 2-0.
Columbia and Arnold each were 1-1 in the event, with both taking wins over Leon. The Tigers (3-3) defeated the Lions, 39-24, in a front-side pigtail, while the Marlins (5-2) turned back Leon, 60-24, in the consis.
Jayden Thomas (138, 2 pins) and Alexander Ulloa (145/152, 2 pins) were both 2-0 for Columbia, while James Oliver (106/113, pin) and Christian McDonald (160, 2 pins) each won twice for Arnold. Leon (0-2) got two victories from Santana Harris (182, pin), Wynton Bowers (195, pin) and Noah Summerlin (220/285).
