LARGO — Medals were hard to come by for local representation at the Jerry Mita two-day IBT hosted by Pinellas Park HS last weekend.
Deltona was 10th in the 29-team field with 102 points, while West Port tied for 16th with 73. Bloomingdale, with 216 points, held off Port Charlotte’s 197.5 for the team title.
The coverage area had one finalist over the course of the weekend, as Wolves senior Kevin Kerns (2nd-2A) reached that round at 132.
Kerns had pinned his way through the preliminary parts of the bracket, with Friday pins over Sumner, Newsome and Chamberlain to reach Saturday’s semis, where he won by fall over Bloomingdale. But in the final against Hollins’ Lowden Ward (8th-2A at 138), Kerns couldn’t match the pace, taking a 9-5 loss in the championship round.
Kyle Yasses (138) and Nathan Hatch (285) each added fourths for Deltona; West Port picked up a pair of fifth-place finishes from Mathew Pishotta (106) and Harrison Caputo (152) as their top performances.
