CYPRESS BAY — New Smyrna Beach found some very difficult competition in traveling to south Florida and the Battle of the Bay two-day duals tournament last weekend.

The Barracudas (14-9 in duals for the season) were 3-4 on the weekend, going 2-2 in Friday’s pools and then winning one of three on Saturday before returning to Volusia County.

New Smyrna Beach had Friday wins over Suncoast (60-21) and Key West (43-36), taking losses to Barbara Goleman (45-33) and Riverdale (55-20). On Saturday, after opening with a 46-33 victory over St Thomas Aquinas, the Barracudas sustained losses against Olympic Heights (54-21) and 3A dual state tournament-qualified Miramar (64-12).

Sawyer VanRider (8th-2A at 182, competing at 195 as well; 3 pins/2 techs/major/decision) and Dylon York (4th-2A at 220, 3 pins & 3 decisions) were both 7-0 for New Smyrna Beach over the weekend.
