BRUNSWICK, GA — Columbia’s Carlee Morrison was the lone Floridian in competition at Saturday’s Port City Nigel Hamilton Memorial girls’ tournament, hosted by Brunswick HS.
Morrison went back to Lake City as one of its 10 champions, going 3-0 to win the 140-lb weight class in the 11-team tournament, with all other teams in the event from Georgia.
Morrison pinned her way through the day, with falls over wrestlers from Gainesville (:26), Ware County (1:47) and Gainesville (1 minute), scoring 20 points on the day for the Lady Tigers, who were T-9th.
The Tiger boys also competed in their version of the event, a 14-team IBT serving — for the Georgia teams in attendance — as a tuneup for the upcoming GHSA post-season IBT series.
Columbia was 12th on the boys’ side, scoring 26.5 points as a team. Camden’s A & B teams finished first and second, respectively.
Jayden Thomas’ runnerup finish at 138 led the Tigers. Thomas had a rd-of-16 tech over Ware and then two victories over Camden B wrestlers (10-3 decision and pin in 3:26) before falling in the final, 9-8, to Camden A’s Waylon Rozier. Thomas had the first two takedowns, and put on a late flurry, but a first-period nearfall gave Rozier cushion in taking the win.
