District 2 Girls IBT
When & where: Wednesday at Westside, 11 a.m. (weighin), 12:30 p.m. (wrestle).
Teams in the field: In addition to the Lady Wolverines, the following teams are assigned to this district: Atlantic Coast, Baker County, Baldwin, Bishop Kenny, Columbia, Ed White, First Coast, Fletcher, Oakleaf, Orange Park, Paxon, Raines, Riverside, Sandalwood, Stanton, West Nassau, Wolfson. Not all of these teams will have representation in Wednesday’s event.
At stake: Top four wrestlers in each of 14 weight classes will automatically advance to the Region 1 tournament at Matanzas on February 18. Additional fifth- and sixth-place wrestlers at each weight may be selected to advance as additional region qualifiers to fill out the region bracket. Those wrestlers are selected via an FHSAA schematic.
Defending team champion: Westside.
Returning individual champions: Mackenzie Mock (Stanton); Adrianna Barrientos (Oakleaf); Mallory Frattle (Bishop Kenny); Degriece Coleman (Westside); Karla Ortiz (Westside); Jazzmine Moore (Oakleaf).
Synopsis: I am projecting Oakleaf to take this year’s team championship; the Clay County Knights don’t have a huge amount of numbers, but could have all five girls on their current roster reach finals, if not win, on Wednesday. Host Westside is probably next in the mix, thanks to the returning strength that they have. The Lady Wolverines have a lot of numbers; if they can get them all weighed in and competing, that could be a problem for Oakleaf to overcome. Don’t count out Baker County as a possible runnerup team as well. Most of the other groups are best known by individual girls on their teams, and I don’t think their one or two at most can overcome the Knights’ five; only Westside, with all numbers marshalled and in the brackets, will be able to manage that.
