#Recap: 3 Area Champs Lead 2A-Dist 8 Group

LONGWOOD — Host Lyman was the top team from the Matmen coverage area in last Thursday’s 2A-District 8 IBT tournament.

The Greyhounds scored 154 points and placed third in the eight-team event, won by Winter Springs with 250 points.

Lyman will advance nine wrestlers to Friday’s Region 2 IBT at Brandon, behind two champions, two runners-up, one 3rd and four 4ths.

Deltona was fourth, with 140.5 points, while Horizon was sixth with 84.

The Wolves will also advance nine wrestlers to regions, with one champion, one runnerup, four 3rds and three 4ths. The Hawks will take four to Brandon, with three 3rds and one 4th.

Advancing to regions as District 8 champ were Lyman’s Jackson Fredrickson (126) and Cameron Warner (152), as well as Deltona Hatch’s Nathan Hatch (285).

Fredrickson bonus-pointed through the 126 bracket for his first district title, with a 13-0 major in the semis over East River before pinning Jones’ Gary Brooks in 3:36. Fredrickson scored three times in the match, with two first-period takedowns and a reversal in the second, getting turns each time to go up by a 14-1 count before securing the pin.

At 152, Warner also bonus-pointed through the field in reaching his first district final and title, with preliminary pins over Edgewater (1:04, quarters) and Winter Springs (1:44, semis) before he majored Jones’ Danosky Decaillon, 10-1, in the final. Warner scored in each period, with a takedown in the first and third periods, plus a reversal in the second, along with a first-period nearfall.

Hatch (20th statewide as per sole Matmen-endorsed state ranker KabraWrestling.com) pinned his way through the bracket, with a semifinal pin (1:31) over Jones before falling Winter Springs’ Malik Emptage in 2:51 to collect his second district title. Hatch led, 5-0, behind penalty points, and a second-period escape & takedown before securing the turn and fall.

The coverage area had three runners-up in Lyman’s Luke Nilles (120) and Cameron Popeck (145), along with Deltona’s Kevin Kerns (132). All three runners-up came up short against Winter Springs wrestlers.

Nilles had a pair of bonus-point wins (fall over East River, major over Deltona’s Kyle Kerns), but lost by fall in the third period (5:15) to the Bears’ Jayden Robles. At 132, the Wolves’ Kevin Kerns (11th) made final with a semifinal pin over East River, but fell in the finals to 2A’s second-ranked Ryan Phillips, 6-4. Popeck pinned his way into the 145 final, with pins over Edgewater and Jones, but fell by a point to WSP’s Jonathan Adams, 7-6.

Third-place area medalists were Deltona’s Kyle Kerns (120), Austin Riis (126) and Kyle Yasses (138); Horizon’s Ethan Viteri (152); Lyman’s Julio Menoyo (160); Deltona’s Christian Rivera (170); Horizon’s Matteo Lasorsa (195) and Bo Kenney (220).

Taking fourths from the coverage area were Lyman’s Micah Jones (113), Allyn Rosario (132) and Micah Coduto (138); Deltona’s Gevin De la Cruz (160); Lyman’s Vincent Savelli (182); Deltona’s Nathaniel Tsang & Aaron Debouver (220), along with Horizon’s Samuel Robertson (285).
