#Recap: Baker Cty Holds Off 1A-D4 Field For Win

Baker County wrestlers and coaches celebrate the winning of the 1A-District 4 IBT title last Friday at the C.L. Overturf Center in Palatka (Photo submitted by Corey Cantrell).

By MATMEN, Tuesday, 11:40 p.m. UPDATE: Wednesday, 9:25 a.m. — Tournament was run offline and was entered off of bout sheets which may differ extensively from what was posted online.

PALATKA — If the 1A-District 4 field were half the size of last Friday’s 11-team event at the C.L. Overturf Center, a five-point margin of victory would still be a very close tournament.

At 11 teams, almost any number of things had to go wrong — or right — to take a win by that five-point margin.

Ultimately for Baker County, the margin of error was being able to close the door on six of seven of the Wildcats’ finals opponents, allowing BCHS to push past District 4 duals champion Union County, 249-244, to win the event Friday evening.

The Wildcats moved 12 automatically-qualifying wrestlers to Friday’s Region 1 tournament at Wewahitchka, with six champs, one runnerup, one 3rd and four 4ths. Union County qualified 11 out for regions, on three champions, two runners-up, five 3rds and one 4th.

Tocoi Creek outdistanced Beachside, 201-152, for third and fourth place, respectively. The Toros matched Union’s number of automatic region qualifiers, with two champs, three runners-up, three 3rds and three 4ths, while the first year-program Barracudas advanced five qualifiers, with two champions, two 3rds and one 4th.

Palatka, with 112 points and four region qualifiers (one champ and three runners-up), was fifth, while county rival Interlachen was sixth at 93 points and four qualifiers (one runnerup, one third and two 4ths).

Florida Deaf & Blind (FSDB), with 81 points, placed seventh with three qualifiers (one runnerup, one 3rd, and one 4th), while Keystone Heights (71) was eighth, on a runnerup and two 4ths. Bishop Snyder (66 points, one 3rd) was ninth, followed by Baldwin (51, one runnerup) and St Johns Country Day (20, one runnerup).

I have nothing on which I can base a correction, and, with respect, I do not change results on any tournament or dual on a parent’s say-so. The actual results, as they played out on the ground, weren’t posted to Trackwrestling and I can only post what I can see. I wasn’t told until after the article had been posted that the tournament host ran the tournament on bout sheets and then turned the bout sheets over to the original tournament host for entry into Track. That source recorded every contested match as a pin. Nothing I can do. I’ve been told I’ll be mailed the bout sheets so that when it’s time to record season-ending records, I have a better chance to do so accurately.
I’m sorry. Until I get the bout sheets, I can’t do anything.
This should not have happened; it would have helped had I been told by the host beforehand (I was in email contact with him) that the tournament would be run offline; I at least would not have an incorrect story. I could have just referred to wins instead of pins, and unfortunately, I don’t have time to go in and correct all the references to pins, falls, etc.
Tournament hosts should ensure this doesn’t happen in the future. Hire someone to run the tournament on Track.
