OCOEE — Fourteen wrestlers qualified. That’s the goal of every wrestling team this time of year, but very few in the north achieved that goal last week.
Olympia was one of those very few teams, and they were also one of those very few that “double-districted,” winning both duals and IBT-formatteed events, as the Titans won the 3A-District 4 IBT event at Ocoee HS on Saturday.
Olympia outpointed the host Knights, 194-164, for the top of the team standings. The Titans only had one champion, but put six more wrestlers into the finals, along with four 3rds and three 4ths.
Ocoee was the only other team in the district to automatically qualify double digits, as 10 Knights will compete in Friday’s 3A-Region 1 tournament at DeLand, with three champs, two runners-up, three 3rds and two 4ths.
West Orange pushed past Dr Phillips for third and fourth places, respectively, as the Warriors had 138 points to the Panthers’ 128. West Orange had fewer qualifiers, with seven to Dr Phillips’ eight, but the Warriors claimed four district titles, with two runners-up and one 3rd. As for the Panthers, they had one champ, two runners-up, three 3rds and two 4ths.
Windermere, with 75.5 points, finished in sixth place, with five region qualifiers (two champs, two 3rds and one 4th), while Apopka was seventh with 69 points on four qualifiers (one of each medal finish) and South Lake finished eighth with 65.5 points and three qualifiers (two champs & one runnerup).
