We do things nobody else does. We write up every news item. We take pictures. (Which reminds me, I still owe Instagram my state photos — it’s on my agenda tonight). We preview many events. We make predictions — badly sometimes, but we’re in there, battling. We publish youth results (WHEN we get them). We provide early scouting reports, by noting what your direct competition will/may in substantial part have back for next season, often a few months before the season begins.

We’re not the best at any of them — not in the Southeast, not even in Florida — but none do what we do so comprehensively.

I’m really grateful for these donations — 26 in all. In one sense, it’s a very large list.

But in another sense, it’s a little less than three per month between the last post I wrote to thank donors, in June of last year (was it really that long ago? Editor: It was). Two or three donations per month versus the at least 150 hours per month of time I’m putting toward the site.

Or, in another sense, the donations came from people connected with 15 programs I cover. Imagine if I only covered the teams that donate. Over half of the number of donations (not the $ amount) came from four teams; almost 20% of them came from one team.

By contrast, I cover 107 now.

Nearly 90 percent of the coverage area was covered for free in 2022-23.

I hear all the ideas to fix this situation. Make every team donate a preset amount in order to get coverage. Go ahead and build a subscription model. Find advertisers. This offseason, I hope to start finding a solution, a solution that makes the donation model less necessary. Plans are beginning to come into place.

I understand why you hesitate to donate. Things remain up in the air for a lot of us. It’s expensive to travel and give opportunities for your son or daughter to compete. I get that.

Things are up in the air for me, too. But in the meantime, I continue to call upon the community to help fund our time that we put into this site. It’s thousands of hours each year, working every day of the year. We DO like doing it and if you like us doing it, also, please do donate. The links are at the bottom of the post. Right down there.

#Wrap: Who “Won” States (Girls & 3A)

We know who won states in girls and 3A last weekend.

Matanzas & South Dade.

But we also like to toss around ideas about the state tournament, that this region is the best, or no, that region is top-heavy but isn’t the best top-to-bottom.

And the little kid-baseball-stats-nerd-turned-wrestling-writer-stats-nerd loves these kinds of discussions.

So, which region “won” each of the four state tournaments?

These numbers might help start the discussion for the girls’ tournament and for Class 3A.

There’s two ways to evaluate which region “won” each state tournament — points and qualifiers (with medals broken down). The breakdowns for 1A & 2A follow.

Girls

Points:

  • 1. Region 2 589.
  • 2. Region 1 551.5.
  • 3. Region 4 490.5.
  • 4. Region 3 289.

Medals:

  • 1. Region 2 40 (5 1st, 3 2nd, 3 3rd, 5 4th, 6 5th, 6 6th, 7 7th, 5 8th).
  • 2. Region 1 30 (3 1st, 5 2nd, 8 3rd, 1 4th, 3 5th, 3 6th, 7 7th, 1 8th).
  • 3. Region 4 26 (5 1st, 5 2nd, 1 3rd, 3 4th, 5 5th, 3 6th, 4 8th).
  • 4. Region 3 16 (1 1st, 1 2nd, 2 3rd, 5 4th, 2 6th, 1 7th, 4 8th).

A pretty good fight here. Region 2, on points and (more so) medals, is the strongest region in Florida, but Region 1 put a charge in on points, thanks to eight 3rd-place medals.

Class 3A

Points:

  • 1. Region 4 684.5.
  • 2. Region 2 492.5.
  • 3. Region 1 308.5
  • 4. Region 3 257.5.

Medals:

  • 1. Region 4 41 (7 1st, 6 2nd, 6 3rd, 7 4th, 5 5th, 1 6th, 6 7th, 3 8th).
  • 2. Region 2 31 (3 1st, 7 2nd, 4 3rd, 3 4th, 2 5th, 5 6th, 3 7th, 4 8th).
  • 3. Region 1 24 (3 1st, 1 3rd, 2 4th, 6 5th, 3 6th, 3 7th, 6 8th).
  • 4. Region 3 16 (1 1st, 1 2nd, 3 3rd, 2 4th, 1 5th, 5 6th, 2 7th, 1 8th).

Well, when South Dade and Southwest Miami score enough to almost outpoint all other regions (Dade outpointed all of Region 3, Dade and Southwest outpointed all of Region 1, and Dade/Southwest/Cypress Bay nearly outpointed all of Region 2). South Florida dominates 3A still.

But you already knew that.

This is our final #wrap installment for 2022-23. We will start work next on #TheSeason, perhaps as soon as tonight. Teams that submit complete stats (every match for every varsity wrestler, boys & girls) go to the top of the line, including our leadoff team, which sent stats to us on Monday). Teams with missing stats will not be worked on until all teams that don’t have missing stats are completed.

  • 1. Region 4 658.
  • 2. Region 3 453.
  • 3. Region 1 388.5.
  • 4. Region 2 315.5.

Medals:

  • 1. Region 4 36 (10 1st, 5 2nd, 5 3rd, 1 4th, 5 5th, 2 6th, 6 7th, 2 8th).
  • 2. (tie) Region 1 26 (1 1st, 3 2nd, 2 3rd, 4 4th, 6 5th, 4 6th, 3 7th, 4 8th).
  • 2. (tie) Region 3 26 (2 1st, 6 2nd, 3 3rd, 4 4th, 2 5th, 3 6th, 4 7th, 2 8th).
  • 4. Region 2 23 (1 1st, 4 3rd, 5 4th, 1 5th, 5 6th, 1 7th, 6 8th).

From the notes above, it’s pretty clear. South Florida is running the show, or #TheShow if you will, in Class 1A.

Class 2A

Points:

  • 1. Region 3 614.5.
  • 2. Region 2 481.5.
  • 3. Region 1 412.
  • 4. Region 4 240.

Medals:

  • 1. Region 3 37 (7 1st, 6 2nd, 4 3rd, 5 4th, 4 5th, 4 6th, 4 7th, 3 8th).
  • 2. Region 1 32 (1 1st, 1 2nd, 4 3rd, 5 4th, 7 5th, 3 6th, 3 7th, 8 8th).
  • 3. Region 2 28 (6 1st, 2 2nd, 5 3rd, 4 4th, 1 5th, 6 6th, 3 7th, 1 8th).
  • 4. Region 4 15 (5 2nd, 1 3rd, 2 5th, 1 6th, 4 7th, 2 8th).

Some curious things there. Region 3, covering SW Florida, is clearly stronger, but who’s next is a curious question. Region 2, with its hammers at the top of the state standings, had more points thanks to those hammers, but Region 1 having nearly 15% more medals suggests slightly-stronger depth.
