#Recap: Host West Port Wins MCIAC Duals Title

By MATMEN, Monday, 11:45 p.m.

OCALA — West Port defeated four opponents last Wednesday to win the Marion County Interscholastic Athletic Conference title.

The Wolfpack turned back Dunnellon (70-9), Belleview (53-27), Lake Weir (78-5) and Forest (45-36) to win the one-day duals roundrobin at home.

West Port (7-2 in duals for the season) saw five wrestlers go 4-0 on the night, as Mathew Pishotta (106, pin), Caden Perez-Pantoja (132, 2 pins), Jhusthino Miranda (138, 2 pins), Evan Lewis (170, pin) and Raymond Valdez (220, decision) all won four times.

Additionally, the Wolfpack got 3-1 records from Prince Valentine (120), Ethen Crews (126, 2 pins), Harrison Caputo (152, 2 pins), David Hill (160,) and Joseph Paci (195, 3 pins).

Belleview, with wins over Lake Weir (no final score available), Forest (40-36) and Dunnellon (54-18), was second at 3-1. No complete set of results was reported for the Diamondbacks (season record unavailable due to these and other missing results).

Forest, with wins over Dunnellon (54-21) and Lake Weir (no final score available) was third; Dunnellon edged Lake Weir, 31-30, for fourth.

The Wildcats (9-8 in duals for the season) got 4-0 performances from Aydan Ruano (120, pin), Brent Ryals (126, 3 pins) and Cane Fernandez (285, 4 pins).

Forest got 3-1 efforts from Sabastian Arthur (106), Scott Smith (113, pin), Skyler Hackl (145, 3 pins) and Ellis Lawson (195, 3 pins).

According to a preseason schedule we received on Belleview, the Diamondbacks will wrap up the regular season at Friday’s Greg Peery Memorial at Merritt Island. West Port will travel to Ocoee’s one-day Ocoee Mat Classic, while the Wildcats will compete in Saturday’s TD Talbott Legion Duals event at Villages, also on Saturday.

#Preview: Raider Duals #2

Raider Duals #2

When & where: Wednesday at Orange Park.
Teams in the field: In addition to the host Raiders, Beachside, Columbia, FSDB, Mandarin and Pedro Menendez are in the field.
Synopsis: The event could come down to which team is consistently able to bring the fullest lineups; that was the case in the first Raider Duals event a month ago. Based on that, I would look for Beachside and Pedro Menendez to fare best in terms of team wins and losses. Beachside was a solid 3rd at district duals last week and had there been an opportunity could have contested for true 2nd in 1A-District 4. The Falcons were 1-1 at 2A-District 4 duals, falling to Clay in the quarters, but in this field could fare better.
Area state-ranked wrestlers (listed by weight class in ranked order) —
160: Trevion Sermons (Orange Park, 15th-2A).
220: Jaelen Simmons (Mandarin, 9th-3A).

2022 Knockout Christmas Classic

When & where: Wednesday & Thurssday at Silver Spurs Arena, Kissimmee (Osceola hosts).

If you make it to the second day, you have done something worthwhile. Medaling is one of the hardest accomplishments in any wrestler’s season. There will be state champions who won’t medal on Thursday. Book it.

#Recap: Lady Pirates Roll at Rumble at the Ranch

WESLEY CHAPEL — Thanks to seven weight-class titles, Matanzas rolled to a first-place finish in Wiregrass Ranch’s 4th Annual Rumble at the Ranch.

The top-ranked Lady Pirates outpointed Boca Ciega, 178-112, to win the team title Wednesday evening. Palm Harbor University (95), Bell Creek (88) and Wesley Chapel (47) rounded out the top five teams.

The hidden MVP?: Brooklyn Watt (18th at 190). Watt only had two matches in taking the 190 title, but Watt joined her more-highlighted teammates as Rumble champ, with a 14-7 win over Wesley Chapel and a fall over Boone.

Outstanding Wrestler: While Watt’s performance elevated her to spotlight, her effort wasn’t alone Wednesday, as sophomore Tiana Fries jumped back on the winning horse after a loss at Lady Clash the previous weekend to earn OW honors for the tournament.

Fries (1st at 125) was 5-0 with two pins in 42 seconds in the first two rounds of 125 competition, followed by decision wins in her bracket over 11th-ranked Juliana Caisse (6-1) and 3rd-ranked Teigan Slauson (8-2), both of Palm Harbor University, before winning by forfeit in round 5.

The 1-2 punches: In both the 135 and 140/145 (combined) weight classes, the Lady Pirates dominated the field with 1-2 efforts.

At 135, they didn’t have much choice, as Breanna Corley (17th at 135) and Saiomy Cabrera (16th at 135) were the only competing participants, with Corley taking a pin victory in the third period (5:07).

In the combined weight, Matanzas’ Kendall Bibla (4th at 140) and Gabby Proctor (17th at 145) both were in Pool B, with Bibla going 3-0 on three pins in 1:51 (including a 23-second pin over Proctor, who otherwise pinned her other pool opponents). Both then won in the semis with pins in the first period. The tournament then applied the earlier pool result to determine a champion.

Early pins to gold: The three remaining Matanzas champions had just one match go past the first period.

Of the trio, only Mariah Mills (3rd at 110) had experience with the second and third periods Wednesday, but she still dominated the scene at her weight, with a sizable lead built up before falling Palm Harbor in the third period of round 3; otherwise, Mills had three pins in 2:30.

At 120, Christina Borgmann (5th at 120) needed just 1:56 for two pins, plus a forfeit win, to take her title, including a pin in 1:13 over 12th-ranked Abby DiCenzo of Bell Creek.

Finally, at 130, Brielle Bibla (1st at 130) picked up a first-period injury-default win and a 57-second fall over fourth-ranked Callie Alfieri of Gulf, then won by forfeit and walkover in the crossover rounds.

The Lady Pirates are now off until December 17 and Freedom’s Let Freedom Ring one-day girls’ IBT.

#RR: Three Area Wrestlers Go 2-0

By MATMEN, Thursday, 2:20 p.m.

WINDERMERE — Windermere’s third event of the 2022-23 seasons didn’t require the Lady Wolverines to travel to Tampa this time.

This time, it merely required setting up and taking down the gym after Tuesday’s four-team girls’ roundrobin, in which Dr Phillips, Ocoee and West Orange also competed.

No team scores were kept in the event, with the goal to provide 1-2 matches for each competitor.

Three wrestlers took a pair of victories on the night.

At 125, in her first contests of the season, Windermere freshman Alicia Williams picked up a pair of pins over Ocoee opponents. Dr Phillips senior Mia Worsham won twice at 140, with a fall over West Orange and a decision over Windermere, while Wekiva’s Bianna Hertilien (no year in school listed on Trackwrestling) had pins over West Orange and Ocoee.

Results from Tuesday’s wrestling can be found HERE.

Ocoee competed in Wekiva’s Mustang Stampede roundrobin event Wednesday night; results are not yet available from that event. The Mustangs have another roundrobin set for December 7 at home, and Ocoee is set to compete in that as well. West Orange’s girls will be at Lady Clash of Titans on Friday at University (Orange City). Dr Phillips is off until December 10, when the Lady Panthers will compete at Colonial’s Grenadier Girls Grappler.

#Rumble: TCHS’ Thomas, Proulx Go Unbeaten

By MATMEN, Thursday, 1:20 p.m.

ORLANDO — In Wednesday’s four-team girls’ rumble event at Timber Creek, visiting Freedom — the odds-on favorite to repeat as Region 2 champion — flexed its muscle in claiming seven weight-class wins, including each of the top four weights in the uppers.

The host Lady Wolfpack was the only area team in the field, which also hosted Winter Springs and East River.

TCHS wrestlers Taylor Thomas (125) and Hayden Proulx (145) both won weight-class group titles Wednesday.

Thomas took a pair of pins over Freedom wrestlers, in 1:56 and 2:27 respectively, in the first and third rounds of the three-girl 125 class. Thomas, ranked 10th at 120 by Kabra Wrestling, falled 13th-ranked Alissa Brown-Washington with her second-period pin for the weight-class victory.

At 145, Proulx had three first-period falls (1 minute over Winter Springs, 1:11 over Freedom and 1:28 over a second Freedom competitor) for her unbeaten night.

Megan Canete (130-135), Allesandra Lammers (140), Gabriela DeFreitas (155) and Martina Nielsen (190) were each second in their weight divisions. Canete lost only to former Lake Howell competitor Kiersten Flanagan (10th at 130, now at Winter Springs), while Lammers’ lone loss was to 7th-ranked Isabel Perez of Freedom at 140. DeFreitas’ and Nielsen’s only respective losses were to Freedom as well.

Results from the rumble can be found HERE.

The Lady Wolfpack will stage another rumble on December 7 for their next competition, with Lyman joining them in competition.

By MATMEN
November 23, 5:20 p.m.
LAKELAND — Windermere kicked off the north’s IBT season Wednesday with two Lady Wolverines competing in the Lady Braves Invitational, hosted by Lake Gibson.

Windermere was 18th in the 19-team field, with two wrestlers competing.

Lady Wolverine freshman Emily McCormack placed fourth in the 140-lb weight class. After a loss by fall in the quarters to fifth-ranked Fikayo Aroyewun (Bell Creek, ranked at 135), the eventual runnerup, McCormack bounced back with a fall over Harmony in the consi semis to assure a medal, losing by fall to Springstead in the third-place match.

Third-ranked Freedom, the top-ranked team in the field, outdistanced #7 Gateway, 164-110, for the team title.

Windermere will compete for the second time this holiday weekend on Saturday at Wiregrass Ranch’s Princess Punchout event. Like Wednesday’s event, the Punchout will be IBT in format.
